Rabies is a viral disease that attacks the nervous system and travels to the brain. The disease is most often transmitted through a bite from an infected mammal. In most cases, rabies is not treatable. Common carriers within Michigan include raccoons, rodents, bats, foxes and skunks. Humans are susceptible to the rabies virus if bitten by an infected animal.

Because of the severity of rabies, Michigan laws require cats and dogs older than six months to be licensed and up-to-date on rabies vaccinations. Michigan studies report that the introduction of rabies laws has resulted in a significant decrease in rabies infected domestic animals. However, wildlife animals have seen a significant increase in rabies infections.
As temperatures continue to rise, animal owners should also be cautious of mating season. Spring and summer months see a dramatic increase in animal births. Spaying or neutering pets can help control the pet population. Low-cost spaying and neutering is available at many local facilities including Blue Cross Animal Hospital and the Michigan Humane Society.
