Pedestrian, Dogs Injured in Royal Oak

Woman struck in both legs. One of the dogs was injured when her owner fell on her; the other sustained a minor paw injury.

Royal Oak, MI — Two dogs ran away from their owner during a morning walk Monday after all three sustained injuries when they were struck by a vehicle in a crosswalk, Royal Oak police said.

The accident occurred about 8 a.m. at Fourth Street and S. Main. The 28-year-old woman who was walking her dogs sustained a non-life-threatening injury to her leg when she was struck by a 2016 GMC Acadia driven by a 51-year-old Birmingham woman, according to a news release.

The driver of the Arcadia, who was turning left from eastbound Fourth Street to northbound Main Street, was cited for failure to yield to a pedestrian, police said.

When the woman was struck, her dogs, Henry and Lola, wandered away. As she was being taken to Beaumont Hospital – Royal Oak for treatment, police began looking for the dogs.

Lola was located nearby and turned over the injured woman’s boyfriend after treatment by a local veterinarian. Lola had been injured when her owner fell on her after she was struck by the vehicle.

Police and animal control officers searched for Henry, but were unable to locate him in the immediate vicinity. They later learned Henry had managed to find his way home and was waiting on the porch of the victim’s residence in the 1900 block of E. Fourth Street, about a mile from the accident scene.
Henry sustained a minor injury to his paw, police said.

Police said alcohol was not a factor in the accident.
