Phony Water Department Worker Rips Off Woman: Police

The victim told police the man impersonating a water department worker convinced her to leave the room while he shut off water.

ROYAL OAK, MI– A Royal Oak woman told police Wednesday that she was ripped off by a man impersonating a city water department employee.

The woman, who lives in the 4200 block of Mandalay, said the suspect showed up at her house around 1:30 p.m. Wednesday and was there for about 10 minutes, Royal Oak police said in a news release.

He told the victim he was there to shut off the water, and he convinced her to leave the room while he completed his work, according to the release.

  • Royal Oak police and fire officials were called to a local business after a female was found unconscious in a store bathroom.

After stealing an undisclosed amount of currency, he fled the area in a gray car, the woman told police. She was unable to describe the make and model.

The suspect was described as a white male about 6 feet tall with a thin build and brown hair. He was wearing an orange vest with yellow stripes.
