"Royal Oak" Online School Sends District Money to England

What a deal!  The signs and ads are everywhere.  Tuition-free online classes for your students.  But who owns these schools, how do they get paid and how accountable are they?

The Detroit Free Press, on Friday, chose to ignore all three of these questions in its press release from the State of Michigan.

I did some digging and 2-3 hours later discovered that the Nexus Academy of Royal Oak is owned by another company in Baltimore that is owned by the British conglomerate Pearson.

More importantly, if my child takes two classes per year at this "Royal Oak" school on Southfield Rd. in Beverly Hills, my district must surrender over $2,100 to this academy--with none of the oversight and reporting required for traditional public schools.

Even the website can't answer if they're private or public under its FAQs.
