Royal Oak Police Interrupt Car Larceny, 2 Arrested: Blotter

A third suspect was charged on receiving stolen property charges, but was released pending further investigation.

ROYAL OAK, MI – Two people from Detroit were arrested Tuesday after police received a report they were breaking into cars in the 300 block of North Troy about 12:58 a.m., according to a police report.

Those charged were Keon Malik Mitchell, 17, and James Coleman Wiggins, 18, both of whom were charged with larceny from a motor vehicle and obstructing a police officer.

Both Mitchell and Wiggins were in the parking lot when police arrived, then fled eastbound on foot into a residential area. A third suspect was found hiding in the back seat of a vehicle the suspects drove to the area, police alleged. He was arrested for receiving and/or concealing stolen property, according to the report.

Police established a perimeter area and, with the assistance of officers from Madison Heights and Pleasant Ridge and a K-9 unit from Southfield, the suspects were tracked to the 400 block of Fairgrove, approximately two blocks away. The suspects were found hiding under a vehicle, police said.

Wiggins faces two counts of breaking and entering a motor vehicle, a five-year felony also punishable by a $10,000 fine, and one count of assaulting/resisting/obstructing a police officer, a two-year felony also punishable by a $2,000 fine.

Mitchell faces the same charges, plus an additional charge of breaking and entering a motor vehicle.

The third suspect, an 18-year-old Detroit resident who wasn’t named, was released pending further investigation.

Mitchell and Wiggins were arraigned in the 44th District Court before Magistrate Donald Chisholm. Mitchell was given a $25,000 bond. Wiggins was given a $40,000 bond. Their next court date is 9 a.m. Monday, March 28, before 44th District Judge Derek Meinecke.
