Royal Oak Student Caught Doing Good

A benefit concert will raise funds to repair another school district's musical instruments.

Royal Oak High School sophomore Tess DeWilde Kohler is organizing a benefit concert for the Croswell-Lexington School District Band Program.

The benefit represents her International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (MYP) Personal Project.

The MYP Personal Project is a project based learning experience that each 10th grader at ROHS is invited to complete. “

This is just one example of the wonderful independent projects that students at ROHS working on,” said Karamia Gutierrez, MYP Coordinator.

Kevin Czarnik, Band Director of the Croswell-Lexington School District, did his student teaching at ROHS. Tess, whose family has a cottage in Lexington, learned that many of the school’s instruments were damaged and there were no funds to repair them.

Therefore, for her Personal Project she plans to raise funds to repair the instruments, as well as purchase new instruments.

The benefit concert will take place at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 7, at the first United Methodist Church, 320 W. Seventh Street, Royal Oak.

The concert will include performances by the ROHS Brass Quintet, Woodwind Quintet, Wind Ensemble, Mr. Czarnik and ROHS Band Director Dave Jensen.

Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for children five and under.
