Schools Select First Community Excellence Award Winner
The new award is met to recognize individuals who breathe life into the school district's mission statement.

ROYAL OAK, MI – Royal Oak High School Steve Chisnell is the recipient of the school district’s first Community of Excellence Award.
Chisnell was nominated by Royal Oak Middle School Teacher Tim Foreman, who called him a teacher, club adviser and mentor.

“I see the impact he is making with his students every day,” Foreman wrote in his nomination, calling Chisnell’s work with Interact and Model UN “unparalleled.”
“I have witnessed so many of his students apply the sense of ‘community’ and ‘excellence’ Steve instills in them the paths they take after high school,” Foreman wrote. “He has inspired a large number of global citizens, and through their greater awareness, volunteerism, and/or careers, they have made measurable impact on making the world a better place.”

“Community is the context for all that we do; excellence is the standard we set for ourselves,” Superintendent Shawn Lewis-Lakin said in a statement. “This vision describes who we are and who we strive to be. Each one of us, each day, is committed to this vision. Each of us knows of instances where individuals go above and beyond the expected in their efforts to make this vision real for our students and community.:
Any community member, district family, student, or person employed by Royal Oak Schools may nominate an individual who works (either as a district employee or as an employee of a contract service provider) in the district for this award. Nomination forms are available on the district website.
