Students Play Charitable Tune at Jingle Bell Jazz

Fans of big band music will be able to swing to the big band sound of Brothers With Others.

ROYAL OAK, MI - Royal Oak High School musicians will raise money for the homeless at the eighth annual Jingle Bell Jazz charity event from 6-9 p.m. Thursday at Royal Oak High School, 1500 Lexington Blvd.

Guests this year will get a special treat — the opportunity to swing with the big band sounds of Brothers With Others Big Band, formed by brothers Bob and Dave Jensen and featuring some of Detroit’s top musicians, many of them Royal Oak residents or graduates.

As always, continuous music through the event will be provided by the Royal Oak middle and high school jazz bands, the Royal Oak High School flute and clarinet choirs, and the Royal Oak High School Jazz Combo.

“This event grows every year toward our goal of becoming the community Christmas party in the city of Royal Oak,” said Dave Jensen, who is director of Royal Oak bands. “The opportunity to both hear and dance to live big band jazz is becoming a rarity. For those who grew up with this music, love to dance, or just love to listen to classic big band music, this is the place to be.”

A silent auction will be held throughout evening, featuring gift baskets in all price ranges.

This year, proceeds from the event will go to the Welcome Inn Day Center, a local shelter that cares for, warms and feeds homeless and other individuals and families living on society’s margins.

Tickets, which are available at the door, are $10 for adults and $5 for students and seniors. Light snacks, desserts and beverages are included in the price of a ticket.
