Superintendent's Corner: Calendar Information and More

The following information was provided by Royal Oak schools chief Shawn Lewis-Lakin.

Welcome Back!   School resumes again for students on Monday, April 14, following the spring break,April 7-11, 2014.   A reminder:  Friday, April 18, 2014, is also a non-school day for students.  

2013-2014 Calendar:  After reviewing guidance from the Michigan Department of Education, as well as pertinent portions of legislation passed by the state legislature at the end of March, we have determined that no adjustments to our published 2013-2014 school year calendar will be necessary.    While we had seven “snow days” – one beyond the normally allowed six school cancellation days – because of adjustments at the state level to how the baseline requirements for days and hours of instruction are calculated, no make-up days will be necessary.   As previously published, the final day of student instruction for the 2013-2014 school year will be Thursday, June 12, 2014.

“Classroom and Kids” Budget Proposal: At the Board of Education meeting on Thursday, April 10, 2014, the Royal Oak Board of Education approved a resolution in support of the “Classroom and Kids” budget proposal and called on the Michigan Legislature and the Governor to support and approve the “Classroom and Kids” budget.   Click here to read the resolution approved by the Board of Education.    Additional information about this proposal, along with a listing of the educational leadership organizations in support of it, may be found on the website of the Michigan Association of School Boards.

School Board Information:   Information about the school board, the governing body of your schools, is available from the district website.   Under the tab that says district, click on Board of Education.    The Board of Education web page includes a link to School Board policies, meeting agendas and minutes, and even webcasts of school board meetings.  

Family Information Updates:  Are you changing your e-mail address?  Do you have a new phone number?  You can edit your contact information or change your password to something you'll remember at the MISTAR Parent Portal. If you are moving, you are not able to update your address using the Parent Portal.   All address changes must be made with the district central enrollment office, which is located at 1123 Lexington Blvd, Royal Oak, MI  48073.
