There is scientific evidence that many weight related conditions, such as elevated cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes and sleep apnea, can be improved with 5-10% weight loss.
We have medications that can reduce our "bad" cholesterol (LDL), but it is difficult to increase our "good" cholesterol (HDL). A 5-10% decrease in weight can result in a five point increase in our HDL, which can lower our risk for developing heart disease.
Also, a 5-10% weight loss can lower triglycerides, the fat-like particles in our blood, and help reduce our risk for heart attack and stroke.
These levels can be furthered improved with regular, moderate exercise.
