One of the markers used to screen for diabetes and monitor treatment is called hemoglobin A1c (HgA1c). It is a measure of the blood sugar levels over the previous 120 days. HgA1c level should be less than 6.5. A number greater than that is a definitive diagnosis for type 2 diabetes.
Research has shown that a 5-10% weight loss can decrease HgA1c by a half point on average. This comes close to the effect some diabetic medications have on blood sugar levels without the side effects.
Weight loss through diet and exercise is the best prescription for managing diabetes.
