Obstructive sleep apnea is a disorder common in those with excess weight. Those who suffer from this often gasp and snore in their sleep. This results in insufficient intake of oxygen, which causes fatigue and sleepiness during the day. In addition, it can make certain other conditions, like high blood pressure, less reponsive to treatment.
It has been shown that a 5-10% weight loss can improve sleep apnea. In some cases, sleep apnea sufferers can be weaned from the CPAP (a breathing machine used to deliver oxygen while sleeping).
