Health & Fitness

The idea of a bicycle night is not new, but it would be new for RO.

I am not a college trained city planner, nor a city manager but I do believe that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. So how about a clean green Tuesday bicycle night from 6pm to midnight now that the city has finally woken up to the fact that bicycles are many times more popular than motorcycles as well as healthier for our lungs and eardrums. Besides the city has already taken a few baby steps with a bicycle corral on second and a few inexpensive meter racks on both sides of Main.
To make it ultra safe bag all meters on the east side of Main from "Ye Olde Saloon" to the new Second Street corral by Brueggers which I encourage to try to remain open that night to take advantage of the bicycle parking just as Starbucks takes advantage of the motorcycle parking.
Incidentally Brueggers has just switched coffee suppliers (Royal Cup) which designed just for Brueggers a unique much improved smooth tasting blend including the new west coast popular sea salt and caramel. Their bagels are just as tasty as New York Bagel and are not just for breakfast anymore. I would hope they would consider placing additional outside seating out front as well as in the back which I am sure would ensure their success if they cared to expand hours permanently. Bicycles will do a lot more for coffee sales. A one street bagged meter lane would be wide enough to handle two lanes with cones to divide it and separate it from motorized traffic.
New signs could direct traffic to the Lafayette Parking Structure to make up for the loss of parking on one side of Main.
From what I hear there is already a Tuesday bicycle night in the Detroit area that attracts hundreds of bicycles including rebuilt older models as well as tricked out inventive custom bicycles.
For extra safety the speed limit on Main on Bicycle Night should be reduced to fifteen mph for the length of the bagged meter Main bicycle lane.
As bicycles take up much less space than cars and the lots south of the railroad would be favored as well as the Lafayette structure a bicycle night could serve a double duty purpose by expanding foot and bicycle traffic to a larger business area. An added bonus would be to encourage a bicycle shop to open somewhere on Main similar to the one on nine mile in Ferndale.
City Hall has finally taken the first step, now is a good time to jump into the pool.
