The Service Becomes Real

Dallas Porter says her good-byes to new friends, and the first half of our trip closes on the field of futbol.

Honestly, I can’t even deal right now! Do you even know the bittersweet emotions I had to go through today? If you answered that question then I’m thoroughly disappointed in you because that was definitely a rhetorical question, so be ashamed of yourself--or don’t, what do I care?

Anyway, I’m sure that you already know this but for the last few days we have been working at this school in San Antonio, Guatemala, and it has been the most touching and amazing experience of my life. However, Chisnell failed to inform me that we would only get to spend three days with the most beautiful kids in the world just to have any relationship with them destroyed by separation. Obviously this would be the bitter part of this trip that no one looks forward to or would like to accept.

With that being said I wouldn’t change the relationships we’ve made with them for anything. This experience brought me so much happiness and so much pure joy that I would not be able to find anywhere else. At first I was worried that none of them would like me and that I wouldn’t be able to communicate with any of the kids, but after a couple gifts here and there and multiple rounds of charades I found that to be completely wrong. As soon as we stepped foot in this school I felt nothing but love--love that I have never seen, read, or heard about before in my life (Sorry, mom :/). Every hug was filled with immense warmth and every kiss made your heart melt.

Well, I don’t know about you but this is all far too sad for me to continue to talk about, so on a brighter note, we played soccer with some of the locals today! I gave them one of my brand new soccer balls to play with and we began to play. Oh, did I mention we played on cement during a thunder storm? Yeah, so needless to say after that game my “new soccer ball” wasn’t so new. Either way it no longer mattered to me because I gave the ball to them to give to the school so that everyone could enjoy it, which I can only hope they all do! Oh and by the way, just to clarify to some of the haters out there (aka my unsupportive friends), they were good at soccer but they didn’t destroy us. It was actually a rather close game, I swear.

Well, tomorrow we leave for Panajachel bright and early and as much as I’d like to believe that I don’t need my beauty sleep, I do because your girl is lookin’ a bit rough right now, not to mention I smell something nasty, so a shower is in order as well. Adios!!
