Traffic Alert: Several Miles of I-696 Closed This Weekend

Plan your route and detours, and keep an eye on the weather.

METRO DETROIT, MI — All eastbound lanes of a several-mile stretch of Interstate 696 will be closed this weekend for an ongoing concrete replacement project that is part of the $75 million Interstate 275 project, the Michigan Department of Transportation has announced.

From 9 p.m. Friday through 5 a.m. Monday, the eastbound lanes of I-696 will be closed from the I-275/I-96/M-5 interchange in Novi and Farmington Hills and Telegraph Road in Southfield, officials said. The closures are weather-dependent.

While eastbound I-696 is closed, drivers will be able to enter the freeway from US-24 (Telegraph Road), although there will be lane closures for additional maintenance work between US-24 and Lahser Road. The ramps to and from US-24 and Lahser Road will be open.

Eastbound I-696 detour: eastbound M-5 to eastbound M-102 (8 Mile Road), then northbound US-24 (Telegraph Road) to eastbound I-696.

Also, keep in mind that eastbound and westbound M-5 ramps to eastbound I-696 will remain closed through mid-August. MDOT recommends taking M-5 to westbound I-96, then southbound along Beck Road to eastbound I-96. From there, motorists can take eastbound M-5 to eastbound Eight Mile, following that to northbound Telegraph and eastbound I-696.

Northbound I-275 will be closed through mid-September from the I-96/M-14 interchange to I-96/I-696/M-5, MDOT says.

The closures are part of a $75 million project to replace 88 miles of concrete pavement along I-275 from north of Five Mile up to the I-96/I-696/M-5 interchange. More information on the project can be found at the “Revive 275” website, as well as through MDOT.
