I'm new to the city of Royal Oak. My wife and I moved here about 4 months ago from Nashville, TN. I'm here to pastor a church, Central Free Will Baptist Church, over on Rochester Road. Now I'm the assistant to a man who has worked hard here for the past 10 years.
We love the city and are loving the people so far.
People talk about the differences between the South and the North. "Those people talk funny." "You'd better buy some snowshoes before you move to Detroit!" "No one down there even wears shoes!"
A friend of ours told us that if we mention we're from the South, our perceived IQ automatically goes down 20 points. Just wait 'til I wear my cowboy boots and hat over at the church social. (BTW, I don't have either, and I don't know what a "social" is.) :-)
Although we like to point out our differences, at the core, people are generally the same. We're looking for acceptance, a place to belong, a family, love. There are things that don't change between people who grow and sell tobacco and people who design shocks for Ford. We're all people, and we're all looking for purpose. I'm thankful our purpose has brought us to Royal Oak.
