Student-led project earns Saginaw transit agency state recognition again (mlive.com) — Saginaw's transit system just earned a statewide award for a student-led branding overhaul that's reshaping how riders navigate local bus routes. New route colors, icons, and maps—rooted in Old Town history and nearby neighborhoods—will soon appear on shelters funded by federal and state grants, aiming to make STARS easier to use and more welcoming for everyday riders.
2. 'I Just Needed Help and I Got Beat For No Reason': Woman Speaks Out After Violent Arrest Video Sparks Outcry (shinemycrown.com) — A Saginaw woman is speaking publicly after video of her August 30 arrest, showing officers tasing and striking her, sparked community outrage and multiple investigations. She and her attorney allege excessive force and serious injuries, while Saginaw police have placed involved officers on administrative duty and the union urges residents to withhold judgment until state and internal reviews are complete.
3. A Saginaw school is being recognized for being a top school in Michigan (midmichigannow.com) — Saginaw Arts and Sciences Academy has been ranked among Michigan's top five schools and in the top one percent nationwide by U.S. News & World Report. Teachers and administrators credit the academy's close-knit, 6–12 "family" atmosphere and pathway-based curriculum, which lets students dive deeply into their interests while receiving strong academic and personal support.
4. Gas prices climb ahead of Labor Day weekend travel (wnem.com) — Drivers filling up in Saginaw this Labor Day are seeing noticeably higher gas prices, with costs up roughly 29 percent and families paying around $10 more for a typical weekend road trip. An energy industry expert says this spike is widespread, but notes prices usually ease once the busy summer driving season winds down.

New report finds Michigan has eighth-highest unemployment rate in the country (wnem.com) — From right here in Saginaw, a new report shows Michigan now has the nation's eighth-highest unemployment rate, with more job seekers than openings and many families struggling with child care costs. While median wages are slowly rising, the study finds Black workers and women—especially Black women—are falling behind, and urges higher minimum wages, better child care, and stronger public transit.
