WCC Hosts Michigan House Subcommittee Roundtable May 20

            Washtenaw Community College was selected to host the next meeting of the Michigan House of Representatives Community College Subcommittee on Appropriations. The subcommittee convenes on campus Monday, May 20; the roundtable begins at 12:30pm in room 150 of the Morris Lawrence building.

            WCC President Rose B. Bellanca will provide testimony regarding veteran student services, workforce development initiatives, and the college’s efforts to address developmental education needs.

            “This is a wonderful opportunity to showcase Washtenaw Community College as a premier institution,” said Dr. Rose B. Bellanca, WCC president. “It is also an honor to advocate on behalf of our students and community directly to our legislators.”

            Members of the House and Senate appropriations subcommittees, along with several Washtenaw County legislators, will be attending Monday’s roundtable. They are charged with allocating crucial state dollars to the 28 community colleges across Michigan.

            Michigan’s community colleges enroll about 495,000 annually, according to a 2012 House Fiscal Agency report. WCC serves more than 20,000 students each year; over 2,000 certificates and degrees in more than 120 programs are awarded annually.

            The subcommittee meeting is open to the public. Media are encouraged to attend.
