After a host family has gone through the initial process of filling out paperwork and interviewing their Au Pair, the next step is to prepare for their arrival! The first few days after your Au Pair arrives are full of excitement but it’s also a period of adjustment for the family and the Au Pair. There are multiple ways that host families can make sure their Au Pair is prepared and in general make the transition smoother.
- Create a handbook with rules, expectations, agreements, child care tips, schedules, and anything else you can think of. If possible, this could be sent before your Au Pair even arrives.
- Setup their private room with comfortable personal touches.
- If you have older kids encourage them make a card/craft for their Au Pair.
- Give your Au Pair a thorough tour of your home.
- Give a quick tour of your local city attractions… parks, libraries, schools, etc.
- Give your Au Pair at least a few days to acclimate before caring for your child(ren).
- Lastly, respect the fact that your Au Pair needs this time to adjust to the time change, climate, rules, and being away from home.
