Girls' Lacrosse Program Continues to Grow in Second Season

The coach hopes to grow the program with summer teams and a middle school team.

The Saline Hornets girls' lacrosse team saw its program expand in its second season of existence.  A small team of 18 players in its inaugural season grew to 38 athletes and allowed the junior varsity to form.

The Hornets varsity team had a good season, finishing 9-8.  They wasted little time incorporating the 25 new lacrosse players with the team.  During the rainy spring, they watched film or specific skill demonstrations in the classroom before taking what they learned to the practice field.

“Our season was all about teaching new players the sport and developing a team mentality.  As a young and growing program, we're attracting athletically gifted players who are excited about this sport.  Their skills improved on a daily basis this season and will continue to improve throughout summer and fall ball play,” said head coach Deb Elliott.

Saline’s offense was powered by Chelsey Bishop, who scored 105 of the Hornet’s 197 goals during the season.  Briana Martin and Meredith Phillips helped move Saline up the field by controlling ground balls for the Hornets with 113 and 111, respectively.

“Chelsey had another great season.  She's taken to the game of lacrosse so easily.  Having Chelsey on the team is a great asset,” said Elliott.

Defensively, the Hornets senior goalies kept Saline in games during the season.  Allie Broucek (189 saves) and Ashton Cole (144 saves) were a strong presence in the Hornet backfield and with the underclassmen as mentors.  Both girls have been recruited to play college lacrosse, Broucek at Trine College and Cole at Adrian.

“[Allie and Ashton] shared goalie duties, which was hard for them but both of them played on the field as well which showed their dedication and versatility.  We had 2 JV goalies - Lexie Green and Marissa Klinski.  Allie and Ashton worked with them on their technique and gave them a lot of encouragement,” said Elliott.
