Hornet Golfers Swing Through Home Opener

All six Saline golfers made strides against a raw Skyline team.

The Saline Hornets girls’ golf team hosted their first duel match of the season against the Skyline Eagles. The team played well against the inexperienced Skyline team, who has just entered their inaugural season in girls' golf. Saline won the match in impressive fashion: 168-272.

“I’m pleased. [The team] looked better to me; there’s always room for improvement, but I’m looking at these three and four scores and they’re getting better. I’m really pleased with [Lauren’s] 50,” said head coach Betsy French.

The Hornets team was led by Karla Gross and Emily White, who both scored a two-over-par 38. White had a steady day without making any huge mistakes, while Gross recovered from a rough second hole to finish with birdies on three of the last five holes.

“What we’re trying to do is avoid the big numbers. Karla was four over after two holes, but she birdied three of the last five holes to finish well,” said French.

Heather Vogt and Rachel Hysong rounded out Saline’s scoring with matching 46s. Both girls played better around the green, something stressed by Coach French.

Stacy Cruze finished one stroke off the scoring total with a 47. Lauren Rasmussen had a personal best 50, highlighted by a chip-in on the first hole of the day.

As a team, the Hornets improved on and around the green today.  They had respectable putting totals, mostly coming in at or under the regulation 18 per nine holes.  The team still has some work to do, and, amazingly enough, not all of it dealing with the short game.

“We’ve been playing a lot of matches; it’s hard to work on things during matches. We’re looking forward to having some practices the next few weeks,” said French.

The Hornets travel to Monroe on Wednesday to face off against the Trojans.
