Hornets Combine to Win Co-Ed Track Meet in Milford
Saline won seven of 10 relays on the track to race to victory.

Even with many teammates competing at Ypsilanti, the Saline boys’ and girls’ track teams raced to an easy victory at the Milford relays Saturday.
The Hornets won seven of 15 events and took second in four more in a co-ed meet where boys and girls combined in relay events. Saline’s 110 points were substantially more than second place Williamston’s 65. (For full results, click here.)

“We showed good balance, winning four sprint relays and three distance relays,” said girls track coach Mike Smith.
In all, the Hornets won 52 medals take first place for the fourth time in five years.

The Hornets were led by Payton Hardy, who took home four first place medals in the 400, 800, 1,200 and 1,600 meter relays.
Garrick Roemer took three firsts and a second. Nicholas Renberg took two first place medals. Andrew Barnett and Rocky Schilke each took home a first and second place medal. Spencer Bishop and Jonathan Parker each won a first place medal.
On the girls side, Alina Luurtsema and Sam Richart each took home three first place medals. Eliana Shwayder and Alyssa Cummings each won two first place medals. Amy Creutz, Kristin Green and Emily Reyst each took one first place medal.
Saline opened the day by taking first in the 12,800-meter relay, when Barnett, Creutz, Renberg and Reyst finished in 44:34.
In the second track event, Alina Luurtsema, Hardy, Richart and Roemer won the 800 relay in 1:38 .7
The Hornets took the 6,400 meter relay, with Parker, Shwayder, Bishop and Cummings completing the race in 19:59.78.
The dominance continued in the 1,200 relay. Richart ran the opening 400 and Roemer ran the closing 400 while Hardy and Alina Luurtsema handled the 200 sprints, as Saline finished first in 2:43. Another victory came in the distance relay, where Schwayder, Elms, Cummings and Renberg finished in 11:51. The 400 relay team of Hardy, Schilke and Alina and Amanda Luurtsema finished first in 47.01. The other win came in the 1,600 relay, where Green, Hardy, Richart and Roemer finished in 3:47.1.
