Hornets Drop Both Ends of Double Header

Hits aplenty, but timely hits lacking as errors leave insurmountable leads.

The Saline Hornets softball team put up 24 hits in two games but was unable to score more than three runs in a game as the Tecumseh Indians take both ends of a double header Friday night.  The Indians won game one 8-1 and the mercied Saline 13-3 in five in game two.

“We hit the ball well.  I want to score more, but we had a lot of hits in those two games against a great team.  We need to get a little more aggressive with part of our line-up, but I’m pretty happy with our hitting,” said head coach Alicia Seegert.

Game one started off with Kristina Zalewski throwing three solid innings to start, striking out the side in order in the second.  The Hornets got on the board first when Laura Vaccaro scored when Amy Bruestle reached on an error by the Indians.

Things began to unravel in the bottom of the fourth.  Zalewski started having control issues.  Two wild pitches led to runs and Tecumseh led 3-1 after four.  Zalewski came back out in the bottom of the fifth, but failed to record an out, leaving the game after 4+ innings of work, giving up six runs, three earned, while striking out six and walking four.  Saline was unable to plate any more runs during the remainder of the game.

“We can’t make the errors we made.  We made elementary errors; these weren’t errors that high schoolers make.  We have good senior leadership.  Our seniors are doing a good job; our underclassmen need to pick it up a little bit,” said Seegert.

Game two fared no better for the Hornets.  Angel Schilke, Amy Jedele and Vaccaro each scored a run late for Saline, but the team left 11 runners on the base paths and allowed 13 runs in five innings.

“You have to fight.  They did, at the end.  They had a little frustration out there, and that’s not a bad thing as long as they can learn from it.  You definitely can see they have the heart, they were pretty upset about tonight,” said Seegert.

Saline hosts the Hornet Invite on Saturday, April 30.
