The Saline Hornets dropped both ends of a double header to the Monroe Trojans on a blustery Monday night. The opener went into extra innings before a two run wild pitch put Monroe ahead 4-2. Game two was called after five innings with the Trojans holding a 9-0 lead. The cold weather seemed to affect the pitchers control, with five different batters being hit by pitches.
“Pitchers weren’t feeling the ball and someone was going to get hurt. Too many kids were getting hit,” said head coach Alicia Seegert.
The early game saw Saline take a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Angel Schilke scored on an errant throw. Monroe came back with two runs in the fourth on a sacrifice fly and a single, and held a 2-1 lead until the bottom of the seventh, when Caleigh Bond singled. Bond scored the tying run on Lindsey Moore’s double and the game went into extra innings. Monroe finished the game with two runs in the ninth; both runs scored on Kristina Zalewski’s wild pitch. Zalewski finished game one with 9 innings batters.

“[Kristina’s] still struggling with the corners, and that’s what happened today. A couple of wild pitches and a couple walks, it hurt us,” said Seegert.
Game two started off roughly for the Hornets. Laura Vaccaro struggled on the mound, giving up six runs in three-plus innings of work. She had three strikeouts and one walk, but allowed six hits. Zalewski came on in relief and allowed more Trojan runs on one hit, two walks and another hit batter. She struck out three. Saline was only able to manage three hits, although they made solid contact often. Amanda Arnett pitched both games for Monroe, going 14 innings, allowing two runs on nine hits. Arnett struck out nine and walked two; she also hit two batters in the second game.
