Hornets Offense Explodes in Shutout of Bulldogs

Strong offense and solid play in the goal allow Saline to muscle past Mason.

The Saline Hornets saw an offensive explosion against the Mason Bulldogs, as seven different Hornets scored in a 14-0 rout Wednesday night.  Saline’s defense smothered their opponents on, allowing only six shots.

Saline (19-2) scored quickly, winning the opening sprint and attacking.  Abbey Wrobleski put the first score in just 24 seconds.  Stephanie Bundas put the next tally on the board, followed closely by Karleen Koskinen’s lone goal of the night.  Bailey Workman put three points on the board in the first period and Bundas scored another one before the horn.  Ellie Brigger ended Saline’s early scoring with the first of her three goals as time expired.

“We just really focused on ball-side drives tonight.  They did that really well, and we were able to score off it.  I’m really happy with that,” said head coach Mary Chatigny.

The second period saw Hannah Lau put her lone goal past Mason.  It also was a strong defensive period for the Hornets, and Stephanie Bule stopped all five shots she faced in the half.  Saline went into halftime up 9-0.

Coming out of the break, Coach Chatigny let some of her backup players get some game-time experience.  Wrobleski and Brigger both got their second goal of the evening, and Erika Glatz scored the first of her goals as Saline ended the period up 12-0.  Bule faced no shots as the Hornet defense remained stout and continued to put Mason on the defensive.

Saline pushed two more goals past Mason’s goalie in the final period.  Glatz scored her second and Brigger her third; Bule stopped the lone shot she saw in the period late to keep Mason off the board.

“The shots they took were strong shots.  [Bule] was really challenged by them.  She did a fantastic job tonight.  Those would have been six goals if she hadn’t been focused,” said Chatigny.

Saline hosts the Hornet Invite on April 22 and 23.
