Hornets Offense Makes a Big Splash in Rout

Jamie Fisher's eight goals led the team to a decisive victory over Grand Blanc.

The Saline Hornets boys’ water polo team put up an impressive performance Wednesday night. They used precision passing to move the offense and strong teamwork defensively to rout the Grand Blanc Bobcats 17-4.

“We’ve been talking about playing team defense and playing a lot more as a team. Today we definitely did that. With the kind of speed we have on this team, if we play solid defense we’re able to outswim any other team,” said head coach Andy Zimmer.

Saline’s offense got going right away, with Jamie Fisher opening scoring with the first of his three goals in the period. Lucas Allen added his first goal of the evening before Fisher could tack on two more before the horn. The final goal highlighted the period, when Allen threw a backhanded pass to Fisher, who put the ball in the net with a backhander of his own. Saline finished the quarter up 4-2.

“We worked on passing a lot this week. The past few games haven’t gone as well as we had wanted them to, but it all came together this week. It was really exciting,” said Fisher.

The second quarter looked oddly similar to the first quarter, except the Hornets scored more the second time around. Fisher added three more goals to his evening and Allen, who also added a team high eight steals, added a second. Michael Bundas and Tom Walls also put points on the board for Saline and the team went in at half up 10-3.

Fisher opened the third quarter the same way he opened the previous two, scoring Saline’s first goal of the second half. Walls and Jacob Aulisa added the only other two goals for the Hornets in the quarter, but Saline’s rout was well underway by that point.  The horn sounded with the team up 13-4.

The final quarter’s scoring was started by a new shooter for Saline, Matt Lund.  Kevin Fisher put his only goal in from a long range before Jamie Fisher’s eighth and final goal of the evening.  Will McCullough, who started as the Hornets goalie for the first three periods and made five saves, scored Saline’s final goal of the evening.  Allen replaced McCullough in net and stopped the only shot he faced.

The Hornets travel to Okemos on Monday, Sept. 19 to continue their season.
