Lady Hornets Battle to Defeat River Rats

Coach BeDell is pleased with the progress his team has shown.

The Saline Hornets battled hard and beat the Ann Arbor Huron River Rats 6-2 in tennis.  The Hornets won three singles matches and three doubles matches in the victory.

“Everyone is playing well right now.  There were some tight matches, but we pulled them off.  You don’t like to lose the close matches,” said head coach Andrew BeDell.

Saline’s singles competitors had a solid performance.  Mary Hanna won her singles match 6-2, 6-0.  Jen Ho defeated her opponent 6-0, 6-2 and Shanna Cooper won 6-7 (7-2), 6-3, 6-2.  Kelsey Pelletier, playing for an injured Darby Molloy, lost her match 0-6, 0-6.

“Jennifer Ho is coming along, she had a good match.  Shanna Cooper dropped the first set, came back, won the second set and ran away with the third set.  She dug in and showed some fortitude,” said BeDell.

The Hornets doubles teams played aggressively.  Haley Breedveld and Heather Vogt beat Huron’s doubles team 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 and Kaitlin Sheets and Margaret Sheets won 6-3, 6-3.  Catherine Bernard and Allie Horwood lost a tight match 5-7, 6-2, 4-6, but Julia Prisby and Lauren Rasmussen rallied to beat their opponents 7-5, 5-7, 6-4.

“All in all, it was a good win against one of our rivals.  We won three close matches in doubles; that was outstanding.  We hadn’t been winning those.  The fourth doubles match was exciting,” said BeDell.

The Lady Hornets continue their season by travelling to Skyline on Monday, May 9.
