Lodi Township Endorses Request to Move Cake Business Into Home

The Board of Trustees voted to allow the business at November's meeting.

Gwen Briston is bringing her work home with her with the approval of the Lodi Township Board.

Without Supervisor Jan Godek, who was absent for personal reasons, the board met Nov. 1, voted unanimously, with one abstention, to allow Briston the endorsement needed to move her business from its current location to her new home in the township.

Briston, who owns Gwen’s Cake Decorating and Etc., appealed to the board for the home occupation so she could move her business from to her new home in Lodi Township. With the permission of the board, Briston will turn half of her garage into a location which will allow her to bake her creations for customers.  She does not have plans to move the business into a separate location.

The business focuses on birthday and wedding cake designs, and has been in the Saline area for 30 years. Briston said she is also open to discussing other ideas that people might want.

“The ‘Etc.’ part of the name means we’re open for anything. We’ll try any new idea you want to bring to us. We don’t just do cake decorating; we bake pies and Christmas cookies and we’re willing to try new things,” said Briston.

She delivers, up to an hour around the area, her wedding cakes and assembles them on location, to prevent accidents during transport. Briston said her record is perfect in delivery; an accomplishment she hopes to maintain with care and diligence.

“I don’t want any disasters. That’s why I deliver the cakes unassembled. We bring kits and assemble them when we get there,” said Briston.
