Matt Seidl Takes Reins of Saline Boys' Basketball Team

The Willow Run teacher brings 30 seasons of experience to the Saline sideline when the team tips off this winter.

When Jay Plitzuweit resigned at the beginning of July, he did so to spend more time with his children, something that Matt Seidl understands well. He had done so himself just a few years ago. Now, after a stint as Dexter’s assistant varsity coach and the head of the junior varsity squad, Seidl is ready to take the reins of the Saline Hornets boys’ basketball program.

“When I took the JV team last year, it rejuvenated me a little bit.The Saline job opened up, and they have a big school and some good talent. I know the athletic director well and I’m very comfortable with him,” said Seidl.

Seidl comes to Saline with plenty of experience. He has been the head coach at Willow Run, where he continues to teach, Pinckney, Manchester, Belleville and Ypsilanti. Seidl has coached both boys’ and girls’ basketball for 30 seasons and has won conference and district titles.

He understands what he is coming into at Saline, too. As an assistant at Dexter, he has seen what Plitzuweit has done with the Hornet program and looks to build on what his predecessor started.

“I have a lot of respect for Jay and what he did. I thought his teams were always well-coached and they played the game the right way.  When you coached against him, you knew you were in for a tough game,” said Seidl.

Saline’s new coach hopes to bring the excitement back into Hornet’s basketball. When the team tips off this winter, he hopes the student body will embrace the team and fill the stands come game day.

“(Saline) is in a tough league. We’re in the big side of the SEC with the Ann Arbor schools and Skyline is pretty good. It makes for a better experience when you go on the court at home and you have the support of the student body. The guys go out and play better,” said Seidl.
