Milan Finds New Volleyball Coach

The Milan Big Reds volleyball program is undergoing a revamping.  Hai Hoang, formerly of Ann Arbor-Huron and currently an Ann Arbor resident, comes highly recommended from the MSHAA officials and other local coaches.

“I was a referee before, so I understand the duties of being a ref and how hard it is.  I try not to give the referees a hard time up there, either.  We’re all in it to help the kids play better,” said Hoang

Besides coaching for Ann Arbor-Huron, Hoang is also a coach for his own club team, and has been coaching for five years in various levels.  The experience he achieved in those years was a large factor for Milan when they chose their new coach.

“The experience he has gained in working alongside parents and students alike in pursuit of goal achievement in a very competitive club program just supported the fact that he has the skills to move the Milan volleyball program in a new direction,” said Milan Athletic Director David Kaiser.

While not a firm believer in having set goals for wins and losses, Hoang believes that, as long as his players are competitive and believe in themselves, winning will come.

“Half of it isn’t X’s and O’s, it’s pretty much dealing with the players.  I think a lot of players have the skill to be good, it’s just dealing with the mental aspect of it; most players don’t have the confidence to go out and perform,” said Hoang.

The new coach knows that he has a lot of work cut out for him.  He wants everyone that thinks they can contribute to the team to come out when the season starts.

“Kids shouldn’t come in thinking that the past matters.  Everyone has a clean slate.  If you think you can play volleyball, if you want to give it a shot, come to tryouts,” said Hoang.
