Milan Track Opens Huron League in Demonstrative Fashion

The teams combined to win 25 of 32 events on the night.

The Milan Big Reds track teams opened their league season with convincing wins over New Boston Huron on Tuesday night.  The boys’ team won 106-31 and the girls’ team won 97-31.

“I was pretty happy with making very few mistakes, and the mistakes that we made are all things that are good to emphasize and we can correct in the near future,” said girl’s head coach Steve Porter.

Milan’s boys won every event but two.  Dequan Chambers won the long jump and 300 meter hurdles.  Chris Spence won the shot put and discus.  Nate Pyle took first in the high jump, and Leo Pittman won the 100 meter dash.  Ike Fink won the 110 meter hurdles and the 1600 meter run and Joe Martin prevailed in the 800 meter run.  Nathan Anderson beat the field in the 3200 meter run.  Milan also took first in the 400 meter relay, the 800 meter relay, the 1600 meter relay and the 3200 meter relay.

“The kids have been working hard and training hard.  We’re going to keep training hard and attack each meet individually,” said boy’s head coach Chad Lawver.

The girl’s team also put up a strong performance.  Coach Porter was particularly pleased with the field events; Ashlynn Plasters won the long jump and took second in the high jump and Emma Brousseau triumphed in the shot put and took second in discus.  Nicole Lange and Jealissa Kitchen were neck and neck in the 100 meter dash, taking first and second, respectively.  Lange also won the 400 meter dash, and Kitchen took first in the 200 meter dash.  Sarah Ray won both the 100 meter hurdles and the 300 meter hurdles for the girls.  Milan’s relays won the 400 meter, 800 meter and 1600 meter events.

“I was real happy with my high jumpers and my long jumpers.  They did a lot better than I thought they would, considering how little they’d practiced.  I would have been happy with these kinds of performances at the end of the year,” said Porter.

The teams travel to Riverview on April 14 for their next meet.
