Milan Track Run Through Cold Spring Day
Freshmen and sophomores enjoy a meet dedicated to the underclasses.
On a cold spring day in Monroe, the freshmen and sophomores of the Milan Big Reds came out during Spring Break to run at the Jefferson 9/10 Invite on Saturday. The meet excludes juniors and seniors, giving the underclassmen a chance to shine and get some experience under their belts.
“I love [the 9/10 meet]. Everyone’s going to run in most meets, but this is a meet that focuses on the younger kids. It makes them feel like they’re on the top, and I really like that. It’s good training,” said boy’s head coach Chad Lawver.
The meet featured co-ed races, and Milan came together well. Courtney Freeman, Chris Sharp, Ashlynn Plasters and Nate Pyle combined to win the shuttle hurdles. Kamaria Hayes, Josh Jarema, Nicole Lange and Pyle took third in the 1600 meter relay, and Tess Odegard, Cory Gyulveszi, Chabrielle Gollman and Jarema placed fourth in the 3200 meter relay.

The girls performed well alone as well. Lange, Freeman, Hayes and Plasters won the sprint medley with a time of 4:58.2 and also took second in the 400 meter relay. Tess Odegard, Hayes, Gollman and Danielle Anderson placed third in the distance medley.
“We didn’t make a lot of mistakes, and the few that we did, we learned from. I was pleased with the progress and the growth that we made. I think we’ll be in good shape as long as we keep training, progressing and learning,” said girl’s head coach Steve Porter.

The boys also had strong runs in the chill. Jeff Murtonen, David Brown, Jack Williams and Daniel McCall placed second in the 800 meter relay and Milan’s high jumpers, Pyle, Adam Salow and Blaine LeClair, combined to take second overall in their event. Mark Evans, John Schafer, Andrew Carek and Steven Murtonen placed third in the 400 meter relay.
“I think they did a good job today, but they did good job in the cold, but the basics and fundamentals were there. I think it’s a great learning meet for the team,” said Lawver.
The teams are at home on Tuesday, April 12 in a dual meet with New Boston Huron.
