Milan’s Season Ends Quickly

The Big Reds' girls are bounced from first round of tourney.

The Milan Big Reds’ girls varsity team was eliminated in the first round of the MHSAA District tournament Monday night. They lost to the Ida Bluestreaks 58-13.

The Bluestreaks came out and quickly set the tempo for the game, opening with a fast seven points and playing lights-out defensively. The Big Reds were held to four points in the first period, both on short jump shots by senior Sarah Ramsey.

The game never got better for Milan on either end of the court. They were unable to get many open shots, and even when they could, the shots rarely went in. Ida, however, moved the ball up the court efficiently and dissected the Big Red defense.  Milan went in at the half down 36 to 9.

“We had trouble getting back on defense.  They just beat us down the floor tonight; everything about hustle in a basketball game, we were outmatched tonight,” said head coach Jeff Scott.

Coming out after the break, Milan began shooting itself in the foot as much as Ida stymied their offense.  Freshman Sam Coon picked up a flagrant foul after having the ball stolen at half court and Ramsey picked up a technical foul for unsportsmanlike conduct as her frustration visibly grew after two quick turnovers.

“When you’re losing that bad and you’re trying with all your heart, you make mistakes.  The frustration comes with it; the one thing I hope the girls learn from it is that, no matter what life throws at you, even if you’re 0 for 6, maybe you’ll get the seventh,” said Scott.

Ramsey led the Milan offense with five points. The Big Reds ended the season 2-18.
