'Not My Finest Moment': State Rep Apologizes for Fake Sex Scandal Scheme

Rep. Todd Courser said he came up with plan in order to catch blackmailer who wanted to exposed the lawmaker's real-life illicit affair.

State Rep. Todd Courser released an audio recording Monday claiming he created a fake story that he had paid for sex with a man behind a Lansing sex club in order to stop blackmailers from exposing Courser’s real-life illicit affair with a fellow state legislator, according to a Detroit News report.

Courser’s confession comes on the heels of audio recordings from May revealing the married state rep (R-Lapeer) had bogus emails sent to GOP movers and shakers to draw attention away from Courser’s continuing relationship with State Rep. Cindy Gamrat (R-Plainville), who also is married, the report stated.

Courser claims that former aides, including the aide who created the initial audio recordings detailing the lawmaker’s scheme, were part of a group of blackmailers that ultimately wanted Courser to resign, the report stated. He had hoped the outrageous story he had concocted, which described Courser as a “bisexual monster” and an alcoholic, would help him catch his blackmailers, the report added.

Courser said in the Monday’s 27-minute recording:

“It was a fast decision on my part to do the emails. It was not my finest moment. It was the only option that I felt would be unpredicted by the blackmailer. … The blackmailer’s still out operating, goading me. So I’m not sure how big the ring still is, but they’re still out there and still anonymous. … I could have resigned, this is really the option that anonymous texter wanted, and doing so quietly. I simply would have been submitting to the authority of the establishment machine and doing so to protect myself and protect my family.”

Courser also used the recording to apologize to his family and his constituents, as well as Gamrat and her family, the report added.
