Road Construction Alert: 16 Projects Could Complicate Saline Commute
Some projects done soon, others have fall completion dates and one – where a under-the-road culvert collapsed – is ongoing indefinitely.

The road construction season is under way in Oakland County, meaning commuters and other motorists may face some delays or detours.
The Road Commission of Oakland County has released its weekly construction project. The following projects may cause some traffic delays through May 20:

The information is subject to change. Projects can change from day to day, and traffic delays can develop in a matter of minutes due to weather, emergency situations and other factors, the RCOC said.
Rochester Hills – Tienken Road, Canyon Creek to Rochester Road: This is the second phase of the Tienken project. Phase one, from Livernois to the Paint Creek, was completed in 2014. Tienken Road from Canyon Creek to Rochester Road is closed for construction. The road is being reconstructed and a continuous center, left-turn lane added. Residential and business access will be maintained within the closure zone. The detour is Adams Road to University Drive to Rochester Road and vice versa. Completion Date: Closed portion to re-open in September, entire project completion is November.

Farmington Hills – Northbound Middlebelt Road, just south of 11 Mile Road: 500 feet of the right lane of northbound Middlebelt Road (near Kroger) just south of 11 Mile Road is now open to traffic. Completion Date: Temporary fix is complete, further work to be done at a later date
Holly Township – Fish Lake Road between Mitchell and Kurtz roads: This section of Fish Lake Road remains closed due to a collapsed culvert under the road. The detour route is Mitchell Road to North Holly Road to Elliott Road and back to Fish Lake Road and vice versa. Project is expected to begin during the June/July period when stream flows are low, so the culvert can be replaced. Completion Date: Late August.
Farmington Hills / West Bloomfield – 14 Mile Road/Orchard Lake Road intersection: 14 Mile Road is closed at the west side of the 14 Mile/Orchard Lake intersection as part of the ongoing reconstruction of this intersection as a roundabout. The detour for 14 Mile Road traffic is Farmington Road to 13 Mile to Middlebelt Road and back to 14 Mile and vice versa or Middlebelt to Maple to Farmington and back to 14 Mile and vice versa. The detour for southbound Orchard Lake traffic wishing to go west on 14 Mile or 14 Mile traffic wishing to go north on Orchard Lake is Maple Road to Farmington Road to 14 Mile and vice versa. Access to businesses on 14 Mile west of Orchard Lake will be maintained throughout the project.This is the final phase of the larger 14 Mile/Orchard Lake/Northwestern Highway “triangle” project. Completion Date: Full project expected to conclude in November.
White Lake Township – Cedar Island Road, Oxbow Lake Road to Bogie Lake Road: RCOC closed this road last year because a culvert that carries the Huron River under the road is collapsing. It is not yet known when the road can be repaired. The detour is Bogie Lake to Cooley Lake to Oxbow Lake and back to Cedar Island and vice versa. Completion Date: Unknown.
West Bloomfield Township – Green Lake Road, Commerce Road to just east of Fieldview Street: Project began late in 2014 and is a carryover to 2015. Green Lake Road between Commerce Road and Richardson Road is currently closed to through traffic. Access will be maintained for local businesses and residents within the closure zone. The detour for Green Lake through traffic is Richardson Road to Union Lake Road to Commerce Road and vice versa. The contractor also will replace bad sections of asphalt that were laid late in 2014. This is an asphalt paving project with drainage and many other improvements. Completion Date: End of May, weather permitting.
Commerce Township – Haggerty Road between Pontiac Trail and Richardson Road: Haggerty Road between Pontiac Trail and Richardson Road is closed to through traffic. Residential and business access will be maintained within the closure area. The detour for the closure is Pontiac Trail to Martin Parkway to Richardson Road and back to Haggerty Road and vice versa. The project includes milling the surface, drainage improvements, asphalt overlay and other improvements. Completion Date: Late October.
Lyon Township – Griswold Road between Eight and Nine Mile roads: Griswold Road between Eight and Nine Mile roads is closed to through traffic so the gravel road can be paved. Residential and business access will be maintained within the closure area. The detour for the closure is Eight Mile Road to Pontiac Trail to 10 Mile Road and back to Griswold and vice versa. The project includes drainage work, placement of concrete curbs/gutters in a few areas and shoulder and ditch improvements. Completion Date: Late September.
Milford Township – Milford Road, Pontiac Trail to the Milford Village limits: Milford Road between Pontiac Trail and the Milford Village limits construction is under way. The 3.8 mile resurfacing project will include installation of a turn lane at Lakefield Parkway and intersection and drainage improvements. Completion Date: Late September.
Birmingham / Bloomfield Hills – Quarton Road near Chesterfield Road: Quarton Road from Cranbrook to Woodward Avenue is closed to through traffic for an intersection realignment and widening project. Residential access will be maintained in the construction zone throughout the project. The detour will be Lahser Road to Woodward Avenue back to Quarton Road and vice versa. Completion Date: End of July.
Bloomfield Township / Beverly Hills – Lahser Road, 14 Mile and Maple Road: Intermittent lane closures began Monday, May 11, on Lahser Road between 14 Mile and Maple roads. Traffic is being directed by flaggers. The road is expected to close to through traffic tentatively beginning June 15. At that time, local traffic will only have access by using Maple Road. The second phase of the project is Lahser Road, 13 Mile to 14 Mile Road and will proceed when the prior segment is completed. Completion Date: Entire project end of November.
Wixom – Wixom Road: The southbound outer lane of Wixom Road, just north of I-96 is closed so the concrete for the Menard’s entrance can properly cure. Completion Date: Friday, May 15.
Troy – Big Beaver: There are ongoing lane closures on westbound Big Beaver, east of Crooks, due to a DTE power cable break under the road. The westbound right-turn lane from Big Beaver to northbound Crooks is closed to traffic. The westbound through lane on Big Beaver, east of Crooks, is also closed while DTE repairs the cable break. Completion Date: Monday, May 18.
Independence Township – Sashabaw Road: Construction begins Thursday, May 14, on Sashabaw Road from I-75 to Waldon Road. The project includes work on the I-75/Sashabaw interchange, construction of a new off-ramp from northbound I-75 to southbound Sashabaw Road and the addition of a second lane to the on-ramp to southbound I-75 from northbound Sashabaw Road. Second left-turn lanes also will be added to three legs of the Waldon/Sashabaw Road intersection on northbound Sashabaw, eastbound Waldon and westbound Waldon. Traffic signal upgrades are included. Completion Date: End of October.
West Bloomfield Township – Maple Road / Apple Blossom Trail / Wyndham Blvd. intersection:The Maple Road and Apple Blossom/Wyndham Blvd. intersection project begins on Monday, May 18. The intersection will remain open to traffic during construction. The project includes milling and resurfacing work, addition of left-turn lanes on Maple, improved drainage, upgraded traffic signal and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliant sidewalks and ramps. Completion Date: End of September.
Birmingham –14 Mile Road: The westbound 14 Mile Road right-turn lane to Southfield Road is closed to traffic due to a water main break that is being addressed by the City of Birmingham. Completion Date: Monday, May 18.
