Saline Introduces New Girls’ Basketball Head Coach

Jeff Waltz brings excitement, enthusiasm to Hornets program.

The Saline Hornets introduced Jeff Waltz as their new head coach to the girls’ basketball team Tuesday night.  The Hornets finished 6-15 last season and were bounced from the District Tournament in the first round by Monroe.

“I’m very passionate about the game and to teach and mentor the players.  I’m looking forward to this opportunity.  I’ve always wanted to be a coach.  This opportunity came to me quick, but my staff and I are going to work as hard as anybody to make this a success and we’re not going to stop until it is,” said Waltz.

Coach Waltz, previously the junior varsity coach, as well as an assistant coach in football and baseball, looks to change the mentality of a Hornet basketball squad that looked complacent to him.

“We have to add a blue collar mentality to this club that is going to out-work people every night.  At the end of the day, we need to know that we worked our butts off and earned everything we got.  If we come out and play like that every night, we’re going to be tough to beat,” said Waltz.

The coach is looking to improve competition during the summer practices.  He hopes to bring an intensity to a squad that will have some talented seniors coming back to lead the team, and looks forward to putting the best five players on the court.

“Get in and make it a positive atmosphere and build up the emotion [during the summer].  I want to get them to compete hard against each other and in the end, bring it together and make everyone understand that we’re one team and this competitive fire we’ve played with all summer long we’re going to play with it in the winter.  That’s my ultimate goal is to get them to really want to fight and win,” said Waltz.
