
Saline High School Crew Produces at Prestigious 30th Annual Speakmon Memorial Regatta
Columbus, Ohio — October 12, 2013 —
Joining high school, collegiate and master’s rowers from 5 states in Columbus, Ohio on Saturday, Saline rowers earned medals in several races against some of the Midwest’s premiere rowing clubs. Almost 400 entries competed in 54 races at Columbus’s Griggs Reservoir, which features a 4,500 meter/2.8 mile curving course along the natural riverscape of the Scioto River. The Speakmon Memorial Regatta is one of the most popular and challenging fall rowing events in the Midwest and with walking paths along the river's edge for multiple observation opportunities, the Speakmon is both a participant and spectator's delight.

The Saline men earned two top three finishes on Saturday with the Men’s Lightweight 8 (Jacob Hargrove, Ian Marlow, Julian Rodriguez, Matt Eby, Sean Huffles, Graham Fox, Travis Krause, Ben Friman and coxswain Victoria Wellings) winning Saline’s only gold medal of the day with a first place finish, 5 seconds ahead of second place Dublin and 22 seconds ahead of third place Upper St. Clair. The Men’s Open 2x (Travis Krause and Jacob Hargrove) finished with a close third place finish in their 15 boat race behind boats from the Dayton Rowing Club with the top three boats separated by only 30 seconds.
The Saline women also made a successful showing with the Women’s Open 4x (Rachel Weidmayer, Michaela Wells, Sarah Loughman and Sarah Buckeridge) finishing in 2nd place between two boats from Clermont Crew. In the nine boat Women’s Open 2x, Saline entered two boats in the eight boat race and finished 2-3 with Liz Walsh and Alexis Wolfe in second place and Alle Fiske and Rachel Weidmayer finishing in third place behind the winning entry from Cincinnati Country Day.)

The Hornets close their fall season on October 27 at Lake Leelanau for the Leelanau Chase Regatta.
