Season Preview: Milan Boys Track Team Looks to Grab Elusive Huron League Championship

Coach Chad Lawver is also looking to see more State qualifiers from his team.

The Milan Big Reds boys’ track team is looking to improve on a season that saw them finish second at the Huron League meet.  The team had some state qualifiers, but not enough, according to head coach Chad Lawver.

“We’ve been runner up in the Huron League championships the last few years and it would be nice to get one of those. We want to do well in the Huron League and get guys qualified for States,” said Lawver.

The team sports a number of quality runners in a multitude of events. Among others, Leo Pittman, Ryan Spears and Jevon Freeman all run sprints for Milan. Freeman also runs hurdle events along with Dequan Chambers. Joe Martin heads the middle distance events for the Big Reds.

“Some of the seniors were running varisty as sophmores, so we’re expecting a lot out of them,” said Chad Lawver. “We had a relay qualify for States [last year]; I’d like to get a couple more qualified this year, along with more individuals.  Right now we’d like to finish top in the Huron League and get guys qualified for State.”

The track team will open the season at Hillsdale in an indoor invite event on March 31.
