Season Preview: Milan Girls' Tennis Team Looks to Rebound from Rough 2010 Campaign

Coach Nathan Rodriguez sees more dedication and strong leadership in his team.

The Milan Big Reds girls' tennis team is looking to improve on a 2-6 record that saw them place fifth in the Huron League in the 2010 season. That team graduated six seniors, but head coach Nathan Rodriguez sees more in this team.

“Last year’s team was a deep team where experience was our biggest strength. This year’s team will have a lot of youth but has shown increased dedication in the off season,” said Rodriguez, who is in his fourth year as Milan’s head coach.

There are many key players returning for Milan. Junior Sydney Lammers is a strong player in the singles division. Seniors Lauren Kartje, Lizzie Jones and Katie Werstein compose a solid base for the doubles matches along with juniors Heather Kiger and Sara Smith.

“Our leadership from the seniors and juniors is strong and this year will be successful if we continue to stay dedicated to improving our game throughout the season,” said Rodriguez.

Those leaders have some improving players coming up with them this season. Junior Maggie Williams and freshmen Rachel Eliason, Melinda Rosales and Megan Pendleton are all working hard and showing good signs of improvement, according to Coach Rodriguez.
