Senior Lead Boys' Lacrosse Team to Solid Season

A team with a lot of young talent, the Hornets grew together as the season progressed.

The Saline Hornets 2011 boy’s lacrosse season ended quickly once the post-season began.  It was, however, a successful season.  The team finished 10-6, and had several athletes that were recognized by the conference as top performers.

The season started off visiting three different teams in five days for Saline.  They ended the stretch 1-2, then settled into a soggy April with only four games, all of which they won.  Entering May 5-2, the Hornets dropped a heartbreaker to Dexter at home in double overtime.

“The Dexter game was just as much of a highlight as it was a disappointment for our kids. It was an example of how the game should be played, by both Dexter and Saline.  The boys played their hearts out, and while they didn't come away with the victory, they learned a great deal about doing the little things in the game that make the difference,” said head coach Matt Ceo.

After suffering a bit of malaise from the Dexter loss against Okemos, the team rebounded nicely and ended May beating Plymouth, Ann Arbor Huron and Bedford.  A tough loss to Ann Arbor Pioneer ended conference play for Saline; the team would be ousted from regional play by Detroit Catholic Central.

The Hornets had a talented team, led offensively by Brad Harris, Cam Frotten and Colin Cederna.  These three athletes represented Saline as 1st Team All-SEC.  Austin Burd, Brian Merk and Tom Hickey earned All-SEC Honorable Mentions for their outstanding performances for the Hornets.  It was the seniors that carried the team, though.

“The Saline Lacrosse Program puts an emphasis on senior leadership. We talk about leaving a legacy for the younger players to follow. Many of our seniors volunteer their time working with middle school and elementary players. They take their roles very seriously, and represent the team in the most positive way possible. On the field, they are a "lead by example" group. They're not boastful or cocky; they go out and try to take care of business. They successful manage the line between having fun and doing hard work. I couldn't be more proud of this group of young men. I know they will go on to do great things when they leave Saline,” said Ceo.
