Senior Night Highlighted by No-Hitter
Kristina Zalewski sends off the seniors with a dominating performance from the mound.
The Saline Hornets girls’ softball celebrated its seniors by powering past the Ann Arbor Huron River Rats on Tuesday night. Game one ended after five innings with a Saline mercy, 13-0. The nightcap was closer, but the Hornets scraped out a 2-1 win on early offense and solid defense.
“I love these seniors. They’re very close and they all want to win. There is not one kid I wouldn’t want to have on my team for the next ten years,” said head coach Alicia Seegert.
Despite scoring 13 runs, the first game’s highlight was the performance by Kristina Zalewski’s no-hitter. Zalewski was overpowering, striking out 13 and only walking one. The River Rats only managed to put three balls in play all game, none of which got out of the infield. The offense responded appropriately, putting up 13 runs on 13 hits. Sarah Tommelein went 3-4 with three RBIs, while Jenna Santure had two hits of her own, as well as three RBIs.

“[Kristina] had a lot of pitches today. She threw her rise well, her curve and drop well, and she threw her screw really well. That really throws kids off,” said Seegert.
Defense was the key to game two. Laura Vaccaro threw seven solid innings, allowing one run on six hits and striking out six. Her defense was excellent behind her, making all the plays and helping keep Ann Arbor off the board until late in the game. Saline’s offense struck early, scoring two runs on an Angel Schilke single. The Hornets threatened again in the third and fourth innings, but were unable to plate any more runs. Vaccaro struck out Ann Arbor’s Courtney Ziemba to end a 1-2-3 seventh inning for the win.
