Should You Repair or Replace Your Skylight?

There are various warning signs that a skylight should be inspected for damage.

A skylight within one’s home brings many benefits along with it. Besides its obvious aesthetic appeal, it also allows tons of natural light into a room. That natural light also leads to a more energy efficient home since there’s less of a need for electricity. However, what happens when your skylight suddenly becomes damaged? How do you know if you should repair or replace your skylight?

There are various warning signs that a skylight should be inspected for damage. These signs include: excess condensation on or around the skylight, drafts within the room, discoloration, a damp ceiling or walls, water stains, or cracks within the plastic or glass. Leaks can often be repaired but when a skylight is older and has not received regular maintenance, it’s possible it will need to be replaced. The same can be said of cracks within skylights as well. Skylights that are improperly sealed lead to drafts and excess moisture, and should be assessed immediately to find the best course of action.

Regular cleaning and maintenance cane make quite a difference! Some skylight issues arise as a result of it being dirty, while others are due to lack of care. Before you break out the ladder to give it a once over, you may want to reach out to the professionals.
