Strong First Half Not Enough for Milan Girls
Defense holds Grosse Ile to 15 points in the first two quarters, but the Big Reds fall 58-32.
Utilizing a quick 1-3-1 zone, the Milan Big Reds girls varsity basketball team came out strong Monday, holding the Grosse Ile Red Devils to 15 first-half points.
But Grosse Ile pulled away with strong three-point shooting during a sluggish second half for Milan and wound up winning 58-32.
Milan held a two-point lead after the opening period and went into halftime down 15-13. The girls played aggressively and rotated quickly while in their zone defense.

After the break, things unraveled in a hurry for the Big Reds. Grosse Ile came out hitting three-point shot after three-point shot, while the strong defense that powered Milan early was all but out of gas in the third period.
“We came out and [the girls] acted like they didn’t know what to do,” said head coach Jeff Scott.

Milan allowed 25 points in the third quarter, while scoring only eight.
“Offensively, we were anemic the second half,” said Scott. “I love the way we played in the first half, the way the girls left it all on the floor. We said in the locker room that we need to come out with the same fire, the same intensity, and it just wasn’t there.”
Corinna Schneider led Milan with 14 points, six rebounds and three steals.
Milan travels to play St. Mary Catholic Central on Thursday.
