Tenacious Defense Leads Milan to Victory

Milan's strong press stymies Grosse Ile.

The Milan Big Reds came out aggressively against Grosse Ile early Tuesday night, going on a 9-0 run to open the basketball game, and they never looked back in a 58-34 victory.

“We had our hands on so many balls tonight," Milan head coach Josh Tropea said. "We created a lot of turnovers, and when you create turnovers, you get easy opportunities."

The Big Reds were powered offensively by Andre Duffin, who scored 20 points and had two slam dunks.

“Andre did a good job in the press, he created a lot of havoc, and when he had a chance, he finished, which is good to see,” Tropea said.

Duffin and the rest of the Big Reds had a strong night on both ends of the court. On defense, they rotated quickly and pressed Grosse Ile all the way down the court. On offense, they moved the ball effectively and got it into the paint often.

“We spread it around. Four different guys had 3s," Tropea said. "I would still like us to be stronger when we get the ball in the paint, but we’re getting better.”

The Milan junior varsity team lost 55-41 earlier in the evening. Stephen Evans led the scoring for the Big Reds with 11 points, and Alex Harrison had 10.

Milan plays St. Mary Catholic Central of Monroe on Friday at SMCC for the Huron League title.

“Get there early,” said Tropea, laughing. “They lock and key the place quick.”
