Milan Track Season Opens at Hillsdale Indoor Event
Both coaches are happy with their teams' efforts and successes this early in the season.
The Milan Big Reds track and field opened its season Thursday night at an indoor meet at Hillsdale College. While no official final scores were tallied at the event, both girl’s head coach Steve Porter and boy’s head coach Chad Lawver were happy with the effort of their teams.
“We didn’t make a lot of mistakes. It was a good first start. We’re going in the right direction,” said Porter.
The girls’ team had two first place finishes. Jealissa Kitchen won the 55 meter dash and Courtney Freeman won the 55 meter hurdles. Eran Young placed second in the long jump and the 800 meter relay finished second behind Madison.

“We have a long ways to go, but we have a long time to get there. We have a lot of young girls; we showed some heart today, we raced and were pretty competitive,” said Porter.
For the guys, there were three first place finishes. Kalef Kelsey won the 55 meter dash, Dequan Chambers won the long jump and the 1600 meter relay beat the field. Dan Fick placed second in the 55 meter hurdles, Ike Fink took second in the 1600 meter run and the 800 meter relay placed second behind Madison.

“It didn’t look like a first meet to me. They’ve been working really hard and it showed today. Now we just need to get into shape,” said Lawver.
The track and field team travels to Jefferson on April 9 for its next meet.
