Weather Not the Strangest Thing as Milan Splits Two Games to Open Season

Big Reds claw their way back into the second game after being down by as many as eleven.

In a day that saw sunshine, rain, sleet, hail and a never ending wind, the Milan Big Reds won the day’s opener against the Woodhaven Warriors 6-5, but dropped the second game against Whitmore 19-13.  Milan (1-1) struggled defensively in the second game, committing seven errors.

Noah Bellers pitched well in the opening game, going four innings and allowing no runs.  Steven Price went 1-3 with a single and had two RBIs and Chaz Poindexter went 1-2 with a single, two walks and scored two runs.

“[Noah] throws a lot of strikes and he keeps the ball down.  He’s hittable, by no means is he going to overpower you, but he did exactly what he needed to do.  He only gave up one walk, and hopefully he keeps that up all year,” said head coach Adam Gilles.

The game got close late, but Milan held on when Price caught a fly ball in right field and made a perfect throw out a runner at home plate to end the game.

The second game did not go as well for the Big Reds.  Poindexter went only two and two thirds of an inning and allowed seven runs.  The game was messy in every way, with seven errors and saw the weather change frequently.  At one point, there was hail in the outfield, but not on the infield.

Milan prevented a mercy by scoring eight runs in the fifth, but could not continue the onslaught.  Spencer Dennison finished the game with two innings of shutout pitching.

Milan travels to Plymouth to play a double header against the Wildcats on Tuesday, April 5.
