The DDA board will now decide in October whether to approach its previous finalist, reopen the search, or adjust the salary as it works to stabilize leadership after nearly a year without a permanent director.
2. Turtlebox Bassmaster Opens presented by Battery Tender unveils 2027 schedule (bassmaster.com) — Sault Ste. Marie will host a Turtlebox Bassmaster Opens tournament on the St. Marys River June 23–25, 2027, marking B.A.S.S.'s first-ever event on this fishery. Local tourism leaders say the community is eager to welcome anglers and fans, showcase the river's renowned smallmouth bass, and enjoy a week of national attention as part of a broader eight-stop schedule stretching from Texas to New York.
3. Dafter man faces assault, failure to stop charges in Sault Ste. Marie bike crash (sooleader.com) — Sault Ste. Marie police are investigating a Sept. 21 crash near the Fort Street Bridge where a bicyclist was seriously injured, and they're asking anyone with information to come forward. A Dafter man, Mark Mcleod, has been charged with assault and failure to stop after allegedly leaving the scene, while the victim is now in stable condition.
4. New Lock at the Soo project reaches 50% completion in Phase 3 (sooleader.com) — Work on the massive New Lock at the Soo in Sault Ste. Marie has reached 50% completion in its third phase, keeping the multibillion-dollar project on track for 2030. With more than 600 workers and enormous concrete pours underway, the new Poe-sized lock is designed to protect Great Lakes shipping, steel production, and local jobs for decades to come.
5. The Busiest Shipping Routes On The Great Lakes (worldatlas.com) — Massive freighters moving iron ore and grain across the Great Lakes all squeeze through narrow chokepoints, including the Soo Locks at Sault Ste. Marie. The piece explains how the St. Marys River, Detroit and St. Clair rivers, Lake St. Clair channels, the Welland Canal, and St. Lawrence Seaway together keep cargo flowing, and why any slowdown at the Soo can ripple hundreds of miles away.
