Trinity Lutheran Social Ministries in Utica is preparing for their 16th annual used book sale April 7-9. Books are sorted and stored all year long for this special occasion. The gymnasium is filled with 40+ tables of books stacked high and sorted by category. Each table has a name card from “Fiction-A” (authors whose last name begins with ‘A’) to cookbooks, non-fiction, small children, sports and more.
As all books are donated during the year (none are kept from year to year) there are always some surprises. About 800 books will not be sorted, but kept on two tables for viewing and purchase. Most of these were collected in the 1950’s, still in their original perfect jackets, reminding us of the days before Kindles. For the first time a table is set aside for Hebrew/Jewish books.

Funds from the used book sale are used to help partner ministries rather than for use at the church. $1500 will be set aside to purchase food/supplies for the June 7 meal at Crossroads in Detroit. Each Sunday a different group prepares and serves a meal for 600-800 at Crossroad’s location on West Grand Boulevard. Another $500 will be set aside for collaboration with Utica United Methodist Church to provide free oil changes to single parents in October. More projects are on the planning boards.
The sale begins Tuesday, April 7 from 5-8 p. m. as ‘Preview Night’ where book prices are doubled. This is an especially strong night for attendance by dealers and collectors. Wednesday, April 8, prices return to $1 for hard covers and $0.50 for soft covers. Hours are noon to 8 p.m.

Thursday starts with the normal pricing from noon to 6 p.m. however at 6 p.m. a ‘bag sale’ for $2 per bag is available until 7 p.m. At 7:00 all leftover books are free. Yes. Free.
Trinity Lutheran Church is located at 4510 Van Dyke, the north east corner of Van Dyke and M-59. The easiest entrance is Door # 2 (gym entrance). An elevator is available in the lobby of the main entrance. For more information, call 586-731-4490.
