AVID students go green for a day

Davis Junior High students sampled Spartan life when they visited Michigan State University

With the future in mind, eighth and ninth grade AVID students from Davis Junior High sampled Spartan life when they visited Michigan State University.

AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination and its mission includes preparing students for a college or university experience.

During a presentation about admissions, students learned that MSU offers more than 150 degree programs and study abroad opportunities on nearly every continent. Christian Cook remarked, “MSU is very diverse and has a wide range of class options.”

Maggie Devore noted that potential students need at least a 3.3 GPA to be considered for admission.

In addition to learning about admissions, students walked portions of the campus. From Hogwarts-like buildings to Spartan Stadium with seating for 75,005 people, Michigan State University impressed the students.

Ninth grader Amelie Keqaj liked the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum, which has no right angles and was used in the filming of Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice.

Emma Vitale appreciated “The Rock” and said: “It is a tradition they have. They paint the rock every day and it’s covered in about two feet of paint.”

After their walk, students ate lunch at Brody Square, which boasts some of the best dormitory food in Michigan. Eighth-graders Garrett Kay and Angel Caruso remarked that it is all-you-can-eat and offers many choices, including sushi and ice cream.

Getting out and seeing campuses can greatly impact students’ plans and decisions. Eighth grader Jessica Stafford said: “This school may be a great option for me. I can really see myself there and even living there would be awesome.”
