Bemis students and principal brave the shave to support cancer research

A band of bald Bemis brothers helped raise $3,000 to fight childhood-specific cancers

A close shave for five Bemis Junior High School students and their principal Tom Yaw and five students is supporting cancer research.

Mr. Yaw and students Joey Sorgi, Noah Beninati, Kyle Rutkowski, Malachi Watts, Anthony Pelino and Chase Gahlau took part in a head shaving event through the St. Baldrick Foundation, a volunteer organization dedicated to raising money for children’s cancer research.

“I love helping people whenever I can and I knew doing this would make my mom proud,” said Watts. “When I first got there I was nervous, then when they started shaving I couldn’t stop smiling.”

Principal Yaw said, “I chose to join Team Bemis as a shavee in support of our students at Bemis and of course for the cause of raising funds to combat childhood-specific cancers. Next year we plan to expand Team Bemis to include former Bemis students who are current Henry Ford II High School students. This was a great experience that has created a band of bald Bemis brothers and hopefully a tradition that will continue well into the future.”

The Bemis community raised more than $3,000 for the foundation though this effort.
